Daegu Metropolitan City and the Daegu-Gyeongbuk International Exchange Association held the 2024 Daegu-Gyeongbuk International Exchange Association Friendship Night on Dec. 1. The event, now in its 15th year, brought together diplomats and representatives from around the world to celebrate and strengthen international cooperation and civil diplomacy.

This year’s theme — the pursuit of harmony — resonated throughout the evening as 25 diplomats from 12 countries, including Hungary, Myanmar and Slovakia, gathered alongside over 600 participants.

The event opened with a moving solo performance of the Korean song "Longing for Mount Geumgang," setting a harmonious tone for the evening. Co-chairpersons of the association delivered welcome speeches, followed by congratulatory remarks from key ambassadors, including Istvan Szerdahelyi, the Hungarian ambassador to Korea.

In their addresses, the ambassadors emphasized the importance of global unity and cooperation in addressing pressing international issues. They spoke about the need for collective efforts to achieve global peace and prosperity amid challenges such as war, poverty and natural disasters. Szerdahelyi highlighted the role of civil diplomacy in fostering mutual understanding and cooperation among nations.

The Daegu-Gyeongbuk International Exchange Association, established in 2008, plays a pivotal role in promoting international relations through various initiatives. The association comprises private diplomatic associations from 40 countries. It engages in a wide range of activities, including disaster relief, cultural exchanges and scholarship programs, to enhance the region’s global presence.

Jeong Jang-soo, the deputy mayor of Daegu, underscored the increasing importance of the private sector in global diplomacy.

“In these complex and challenging times, the role of civil diplomacy has become crucial. As Daegu prepares for the next 50 years, we seek your continued support and cooperation to help our city grow on the global stage,” Jeong said.
