Incheon Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok met with Cezar Manole Armeanu, the Romanian ambassador to Korea, Tuesday, to foster stronger economic and cultural ties between the Korean port city and the European country.

Yoo emphasized Incheon's global prominence in biopharmaceutical production, its leadership in air mobility and environmentally sustainable energy conversion, and its role as a hub for internationally acclaimed semiconductor post-processing companies.

Expressing optimism, he underscored the potential for establishing robust economic cooperation and collaboration across various sectors between Incheon and Romania.

Furthermore, Yoo articulated a vision to bolster networks with the 7.08 million overseas Koreans, serving as "private economic diplomacy envoys" in 193 countries. This initiative aims to position Incheon among the world's top 10 cities, fostering international partnerships and growth.

During the meeting, Yoo announced the imminent opening of the Honorary Consulate of Romania in Songdo, Incheon, Jan. 26. He hoped that the consulate would offer valuable assistance to more than 300 Romanians residing in Korea, as well as those visiting for education or business purposes, thereby contributing to meaningful bilateral exchanges.

With the establishment of the new Romanian Honorary Consulate in Songdo following similar offices in Daejeon and Busan, expectations are high for enhanced consular support for Romanians in Korea. The consulate is poised to play a pivotal role in boosting trade and investment relations between Romania and Korea.

Romania, renowned for its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, forged diplomatic ties with Korea in 1990. The cooperation between the two nations has flourished, particularly in sectors such as nuclear power plant construction and energy and the defense industry. As of 2022, bilateral trade between Korea and Romania surpassed $1.3 billion, showcasing the strength and depth of their collaborative efforts.

The meeting between Yoo and Armeanu signals a positive step towards furthering the longstanding relationship between Incheon and Romania, with both parties expressing enthusiasm for the future of their multifaceted partnership.
