SPO launches chamber music series

By Do Je-hae
The Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra (SPO) will launch a chamber music series with a recital by Wayne Lin, the orchestra’s associate concertmaster Friday at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts.
The Chinese-American Lin will present a mixture of modern and classical pieces in a program that will also include the premiere of Sirin Nah’s Sulamith for Violin and Piano, commissioned especially for the SPO. This will be the violinist’s first local recital.
“Our chamber music project is aimed at generating more public interest in the genre and elevating the status of our musicians,” said Kim Jin-young, a PR official for the SPO. “Under this initiative, we have organized solo recitals by our key musicians.”
Since joining the ensemble, Li has emerged as one of the star members, particularly thorough chamber music.
He has received international recognition for his performances as a soloist and as a chamber and orchestral musician.
Prior to his arrival in Seoul, he served as concertmaster of the New Haven Symphony and was also a member of the Sejong Soloists, founded by Kang Hyo, a renowned violin teacher at the Juilliard School in New York.
Lin has also served as concertmaster of the Juilliard Orchestra, the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, and the Yale Philharmonia. After receiving his bachelor’s degree from the Juilliard School as a student of Glenn Dicterow, he went on to complete his master’s degree and artist diploma at the Yale School of Music under the tutelage of Peter Oundjian. He plays a 1779 J.B. Guadagnini violin.
During the forthcoming recital, Lin will also perform Stravinsky’s “Suite Italienne,” Beethoven’s Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 10 in G major and Schubert’s Fantasy for Violin and Piano in C major.
The Beethoven piece is the most mature and lyrical of the 10 violin sonatas the composer wrote. Although a pianist, Beethoven was devoted to composing for the violin. The Schubert fantasy, though rarely played, is one of the masterpieces for violin and a fine example of the composer’s exceptional gift for creating romantic melodies.
The SPO chamber music series includes two more recitals in June and November.
In the last several years, some of the key players from the orchestra have made their recital debuts as part of its chamber music series, including Adrien Perruchon (principal timpanist) in 2011 and Alexandre Baty (principal trumpet) in 2010.
Tickets range from 10,000 to 30,000 won. For more information, call 02-3700-6344 or visit www.seoulphil.or.kr.
