John Lennons toilet sells for $15,000 at auction

A toilet belonging to Beatles legend John Lennon sold at auction in Liverpool, Britain, on Saturday for 9,500 pounds ($15,000), nearly 10 times its guide price, AFP reported, quoting organizers.

Lennon used the porcelain lavatory, which is painted with blue flowers and a blue border at the rim and at the base, when he lived at Tittenhurst Park in Berkshire, southeast England, from 1969 to 1972, the report said.

The loo was removed when the house was being refurbished, and Lennon suggested the builder, John Hancock, take it home and "put some flowers in it," according to AFP.

Instead, the builder carefully stored it in a garden shed, where it remained for 40 years until he died, and his son-in-law put it up for sale, AFP said.

"It is unbelievable," said auction organizer Stephen Bailey after it sold for almost 10 times that. "We had bids coming in from all over the place but it went to a private overseas buyer."

비틀스 존 레넌 변기 1천760만원에 팔려

전설의 록그룹 비틀스의 존 레넌이 사용했던 도자기로 된 변기가 9천500파운드(한화 약 1천760만원)에 팔렸다.

AFP 등 언론매체에 따르면 28일(현지시각) 리버풀에 있는 폴 메카트니 오라토리엄에서 열린 비틀스 물품 경매에서 레넌이 버크셔 집에서 1969년부터 1972년까지 3년간 사용했던 변기가 예상가인 1천 파운드 보다 훨씬 높은 가격에 한 외국인에게 낙찰됐다.

그림이 그려져 있는 도자기로 된 이 변기는 레넌이 새로운 변기를 설치한 뒤 건축업자 존 한콕에게 "화분으로 쓰라"면서 넘겨준 것이었다.

한콕은 최근 숨지기 전까지 40년간 이를 창고에 보관해왔다.
