BoA cast as lead actress in Hollywood film

Pop star BoA has been cast as the heroine of a Hollywood movie, her agency SM Entertainment announced Tuesday.

The dance drama set in New York will be directed by Duane Adler, who is known for popular movies featuring dance, “Step Up” and “Save the Last Dance.” He has also penned the script for the new project, which, according to a statement released by SM Entertainment, was written with BoA in mind as the lead star.

In addition, the film project will be overseen by Robert Cort, the producer of hit films such as “Jumanji” and “Runaway Bride.” Cort and Adler have previously worked together on “Save the Last Dance.” BoA, who has garnered popularity in Asian countries for her dance numbers, is expected to not only showcase powerful moves but also deliver a romantic performance opposite a male co-star in her big screen debut.

The rest of the casting and other aspects of preproduction are currently under progress and shooting is expected to begin early next year in the United States.

Meanwhile, the 23-year-old will return to the Korean pop scene after a five-year hiatus.

She will begin promoting her sixth album, “Hurricane Venus,” which hits stores on Thursday.

특히 듀안 에들러가 이 작품의 기획 단계부터 보아를 염두에 두고 시나리오를 썼다는 후문이 전해지면서 더욱 화제가 되고 있다. 더불어 이번 영화의 프로듀서로는 쥬만지, 런어웨이 브라이드를 비롯한 55편의 영화를 제작한 헐리웃 유명 프로듀서인 로버트 코트(Robert Cort)가 참여해 눈길을 끈다.

이미 듀안 에들러와 로버트 코트는 영화 ‘세이브 더 라스트 댄스’를 통해 작가와 프로듀서로 호흡을 맞춘 바 있다. 또 듀안 에들러와 로버트 코트 이외에도 할리우드 최고의 댄스 영화 스탭들이 참여할 예정인 이번 작품은 '스텝업' 시리즈를 능가할, 지금까지 보지 못했던 최고의 댄스 영화가 될 것으로 기대감을 높이고 있다.

보아는 이번 영화에서 여주인공 역할을 맡아, 새롭고 다양한 파워풀한 퍼포먼스를 선보일 예정이며 남자 주인공과의 러브 스토리도 펼친다. 현재 여주인공으로 확정된 보아 외에 남자 주인공 및 주요 배역 등은 캐스팅 중이며, 촬영은 내년 초부터 미국에서 진행될 예정이다. 한편 보아는 5일 정규 6집 앨범 'Hurricane Venus' 를 출시하며 화려하게 컴백, 활발한 국내 활동을 펼칠 계획이다.
