The government has secured a record amount of electricity supply capacity for this winter season in preparation for unexpected cold waves, the climate ministry said Friday.

The government decided to maintain a weekly power supply capacity of over 100 gigawatts (GW) throughout this winter, along with a reserve capacity of 17 GW, the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment said.

For the third week of January, typically the coldest period during winter, the government secured a record 111.5 GW power supply.

Authorities expect the country will see maximum electricity demand ranging between 88.8 GW and 94.5 GW in the third week of January, with power demand likely to soar to the highest level in case a cold wave is accompanied by heavy snow.

Korea logged its highest-ever power demand of 94.5 GW for winter on Dec. 23, 2022.
