BUNDANG, Gyeonggi Province ― With new headquarters, a local database management provider aims to become a serious challenger in the global software industry.

“The completion of the company’s new headquarters shows that TmaxSoft is becoming what I want to say is a trustable alternative in software. Enriched with cutting-edge facilities, TmaxSoft will go global,” Chang In-soo, the company’s chief executive, told reporters.

He made the remarks at a press conference to mark the official opening of its new main office in Bundang, on the outskirts of Seoul, Tuesday.

The new building is the result of 71 billion won in spending since February. After a seven-month period for remodeling, the 20-story building will be the home for 1,500 employees, the company said.

The Tmax Tower is also equipped with cinema-style auditoriums, press conference rooms to hold global conferences and video-conferencing facilities for real-time business consultations with its clients, the statement said.

As part of its drive for more focus on research projects, the company allocated six stories to these, while the building also has a sauna, fitness center, sleeping room, cafeteria and convenience store.

“Additionally, TmaxSoft will open a daycare center for children of the company’s workers. This will house up to 60 children,” said the chief executive, adding the building will become of vital importance for corporate growth.

Goes for global

Chang said the company’s top priority this year is how to increase the number of its overseas clients using its Tibero-branded database management system.

TmaxSoft is called the Korean version of Oracle, meaning that its database systems are used in corporate systems to help them improve management efficiency with better pricing than global players such as Oracle.

It operates overseas affiliates in the United States, Japan, China, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Russia, Brazil, Canada and India.

It supplies its systems to more than 2,800 companies across the globe. The main clients are from Samsung Electronics, KT, SK Telecom, LG Electronics, the Bank of Korea, Samsung Card, Nomura Securities, China Unicom and GE Capital.

The CEO said its main competitiveness lies in its proven track record of developing customized software according to different requests from different clients.

Established in 1997, TmaxSoft has been leading the local web application server market since 2003 thanks to the success of its Zeus products.

Company spokeswoman Jeong Hye-won said it is pinning hopes on the recently released Tibero 6-brandeed database, corporate software that can help clients better manage huge data that is stored on corporate servers.

TmaxSoft aims to compete with Oracle the long-time leader in the local database management market with a market share of up to 63 percent.

“Because government agencies want to replace foreign database solutions with local ones, TmaxSoft has a chance to grow its businesses,” said the spokeswoman.

More than 127 clients have shifted their choice for data management tools from Oracle to TmaxSoft. So far, more than 1,100 companies adopted TmaxSoft’s products.

“TmaxSoft can’t survive without global markets. We plan to increase the number of our overseas affiliates. We will announce updated overseas business plans soon,” said the CEO.
