POSCO International unveiled a mascot and new name for its women's table tennis team, a first for a professional table tennis team in Korea, the company said Thursday. The team name is Spinners and its mascot is a tiger sporting a red hair ribbon and a table tennis paddle.

The name Spinners was conceived from the table tennis technique that breaks down the opponents' defense by applying spin to the ball in play. POSCO chose the name to represent the spirit of challenge. Its tiger mascot represents the team's willingness to breath life into the Korean table tennis scene.

“We've changed the name and mascot of the professional table tennis team for the first time to take a step closer to our fans. We will continue to provide support to our club by adopting advanced training systems and fostering young talent,” a POSCO International official said.

POSCO Power, the former name of POSCO Energy used until 2012, acquired the Seoul City Women's Table Tennis team and founded a new team based in Incheon, in March 2011.

The following year, POSCO Power changed its name to POSCO Energy and when it merged with POSCO International earlier this year, the team name changed to POSCO International Women's Table Tennis Team.

The Spinners have already won the women's unified title for the second consecutive year in the Korea Table Tennis League, which was launched last year.
