Hyundai Rotem, a subsidiary of the nation’s auto giant Hyundai Motor Group, said Tuesday it has won a contract for the supply of subway carriages to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), the state-owned operator of the Delhi Metro in India.
The company said the contract, under which it will supply 636 carriages to DMRC by 2017, is worth about 1 trillion won and is the largest ever sale for the company.
Hyundai Rotem advanced into the Indian market in 2001 for the first time when it won a contract to supply about 280 carriages. But in just 10 years, it has increased the total number supplied to 1,283 with its market share jumping to 60 percent in terms of orders.
“At first, it was highly likely that another global firm would win the contract, but we were able to beat them due to our advanced technology,” an official from Hyundai Rotem said.
The firm also believes the contract has positioned it better to win the any future railway projects in India, he said.
