Naver and Kakao are offering map services in English that are better than Google Maps.
Both apps can be used to figure out how to get around cities on foot, in cars or by public transportation.
Google Maps can be used, but the app is not very efficient and can increase travel times around Seoul significantly.
The advantages of using Naver and KakaoTalk include up-to-date bus and subway route maps that make it easier to get around. Numerous images and familiar location names help users recognize their surroundings.
“When I was in high school I had to just follow my friends around but now I can use the two apps to figure out where I want to go and explore,” said an American student who went to an international school in Seoul.
Users also can identify landmarks or important sites with icons, giving the maps a tourist pamphlet feeling.
Subway stations are marked with colored dots and the lines running through them are colored (for example, subway line 2 is marked in green). The public transit directions provide information about subway or bus transfers and walking sections.
