SK C&C, the information technology (IT) affiliate of SK Group, said Thursday it officially started a cloud service with China-based e-commerce giant, Alibaba.

The SK affiliate said in a statement that it started the “Alibaba Cloud Service” here, allowing Korean users to access Alibaba’s nine data centers ― seven in the Greater China region and two in the United States.

This happened four months after the two companies signed a partnership in late April about starting the Chinese firm’s cloud service in Korea. Alibaba Group did not establish its own Korean branch for the cloud service, but rather chose two Korean partners ― including SK C&C and Bankware Global.

SK C&C will offer a Korean language service for Alibaba Cloud users. Technical supports from SK C&C will be available for any Korean small- and medium-sized enterprises (SME) or businessmen planning to use the service.

Expectations are that demand for the service runs high, given the high growth potential of the Chinese market, SK C&C said.

“We will continue to make a concerted effort in helping local products and companies to boost their penetration into the global stage,” Shin Hyun-seok, head of SK C&C’s cloud business division.
