Samsung Electronics has unveiled its own generative AI model, Samsung Gauss, which is to be incorporated into its Galaxy S24 series in the first half of 2024, as part of the Korean tech giant’s bold move to join the fiercely competitive generative AI race in the global IT industry.
The company revealed Gauss on the second day of the Samsung AI Forum at its R&D center in Seoul, Wednesday. The generative AI model was developed by Samsung Research, the R&D unit of Samsung Electronics.
Samsung said Gauss was named after a German mathematician and consists of three sub-models, including a language model called Samsung Gauss Language, a coding assistant model called Samsung Gauss Code and an image generation model called Samsung Gauss Image.
"The model was named after Carl Friedrich Gauss, the legendary mathematician who established normal distribution theory, the backbone of machine learning and AI," Samsung said. "Furthermore, the name reflects Samsung's ultimate vision for the model, which is to draw from all the phenomena and knowledge in the world to harness the power of AI to improve the lives of consumers everywhere."
During the forum, Samsung introduced an on-device AI technology that incorporates Gauss with various smart devices. Using products equipped with that capability, users can summarize sentences, correct grammar and conduct various tasks easily without sending their personal information.
Samsung plans to gradually incorporate these generative AI models into various products, while industry experts expect them to debut as early as the first half of next year, potentially in flagship smartphones like the Galaxy S24 series.
On Oct. 31, Daniel Araujo, vice president of the Mobile eXperience (MX) Division of Samsung Electronics, announced that the generative AI service would be applied to its Galaxy devices.
“We plan to apply generative AI to core functions used by customers daily,” Araujo told investors during a conference call announcing third-quarter earnings. “This is aimed at providing more meaningful and innovative experiences based on individual usage patterns and preferences starting from 2024.”
The forum was attended by over 150 people from the industry and academia to exchange knowledge about AI technology, Samsung said.
“We will continue to support research related to generative AI and collaborate with industry and academic leaders to grow together," Kim Dae-hyun, executive vice president of Samsung Research Global AI Center, said. “Through continuous research on generative AI, we aim to improve the value of consumer experiences.”
