A child's perception of trustworthiness is directly linked to how attractive they find someone, and the judgment strengthens as they grow older, Chinese scientists discovered.
Researchers at Sci-Tech University and Wenzhou Medical University studied 138 people, dividing them into groups of children aged eight, 10 and 12, and adults.
The researchers then showed them 200 images of male faces with neutral expressions and direct gazes and asked each group to judge the trustworthiness of the person. A month later, the participants repeated the exercise, this time rating the attractiveness of the faces.
After analyzing the results, the researchers found a direct relationship between the ratings of trustworthiness and attractiveness in each age group. The research, published in "Frontiers in Psychology," also said the relationship strengthened in older age groups.
