LG Electronics will launch its new 5G network-enabled smartphone here under a new brand name in May instead of using the G series, according to the phone maker, Friday.
"The release date could be changed but we plan to launch the new 5G smartphone next month," a company official said.
LG was reportedly ready to launch the phone, which will be cheaper than Samsung's Galaxy S20 premium smartphone but has all the features a flagship smartphone is expected to have, May 15.
However, the official denied the report saying the release date was flexible.
LG had already announced it would ditch the G brand, which the company had used for its premium smartphone series, while retaining the V brand for flagship lineups.
To find a breakthrough in its money-losing smartphone business, LG is using different approaches in different regions.
LG released its premium 5G V60 ThinQ earlier this year in a handful of countries in North America and Europe, targeting customers wanting to try out much faster 5G network-enabled handsets.
For the Korean market, the company said it will launch a "mass premium" smartphone that is cheaper but has premium features such as a large screen, larger battery capacity, and better cameras than the previous G series phones.
For the new smartphone, LG is expected to use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 765 or 765G processors, which support 5G networks, and a dual-screen attachment accessory. The company is also rumored to have an improved design so that it can revive the glory days of the Chocolate phone, which was the company's most popular.
