GS Caltex is set to present drone delivery services and its next-generation gas station at CES 2021 to be held next week. It is the first time for the oil refiner to take part in the global tech expo.
This year, CES will be held completely online amid the COVID-19 pandemic. GS Caltex will be among the exhibitors introducing its new technology and models for future businesses via video.
GS Caltex has submitted three videos introducing drone delivery services and a future gas station. GS produced the videos with the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute.
In June, the company held an event at which drones delivered convenience store goods from its Musucheon gas station on Jeju Island. In October, GS Caltex showed drones and robots delivering convenience store goods from its Soho gas station in Yeosu, South Jeolla Province.
The gas stations are intended to serve as logistics bases. GS is seeking to enable drones to deliver to more remote areas, including islands. Drone delivery is considered a promising sector of business here given Korea's vast archipelago of islands.
GS Caltex will also feature a future gas station model based on a new facility that opened in Seocho-gu, southern Seoul, last November.
GS is pushing for its gas stations to offer recharging for EVs and hydrogen-powered cars, as well as serve as a base for car sharing and drone delivery. The gas stations will also house, charge and maintain the drones.
The company will seek to network with global companies for partnerships through online meetings.
GS Caltex will continue to work with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy as well as the local governments of Jeju and Yeosu on future projects.
"The videos submitted to CES 2021 show the future of gas stations that GS Caltex has envisioned," an official of the company said. "We will continue to seek diverse business opportunities without confining this to the future gas station business."
