Daewoo Engineering & Construction (E&C) has transformed an underground pedestrian walkway, connecting Delight Square, a shopping mall, with Hapjeong Station on lines 2 and 6, into a cultural space made up of a bookstore, an art exhibit hall and a rest area.
On behalf of Delight Square, Kyobo Book Centre and the Mapo Prugio Apartment Complex, the builder has completed the renovation of the underground space, which is set to become a new cultural and commercial landmark in Mapo-gu, western Seoul.
"Delight Square has been working hard to turn the walkway to and from Hapjeong Station into a new kind of cultural space," an official at the shopping mall said. "It has emerged as a new landmark among young couples and families in Mapo-gu. Daewoo has done great work transforming the walkway, which used to be largely neglected, into a new form of cultural space. We will continue to bring in new features to the facilities."
As soon as people enter the pathway from the subway station, they find themselves in a space which reminds them of a bookstore, dubbed "Book Tunnel." This hints the path will eventually lead to Kyobo Book Centre in Delight Square.
They then encounter a large meeting place consisting of art exhibits, benches and several retail shops.
As people reach the underground entrance of the shopping mall, they see a unique art exhibit, "Stairway to the Fantastic Delight."
Delight Square is still looking to attract various retail shops, such as a pharmacy, a family restaurant and a fried chicken franchise, which can create synergy with Kyobo in the underground space.
