IBM's artificial intelligence (AI) platform, "Watson," will be available in Korean as early as next year.
SK C&C and IBM said Monday they signed a business cooperation contract on May 4 at IBM headquarters in New York.
Watson, one of the world's leading AI programs, became known after it won American TV quiz show "Jeopardy" in 2011. It can also communicate with people, making it one of the most interactive AIs available.
AI also has been used in fields including medicine, finance and law since its development in 2006.
"Watson is already learning Korean through TV programs, movies and newspapers," an IBM employee said. "We will be available to move up the process with the help of SK C&C."
IBM and SK C&C will develop a Korean application program interface (API) that will allow Watson to change natural language, data search, conversation and documents into Korean.
The Watson Korean API will be available on a private cloud platform at the SK C&C Pangyo Cloud Center that will open in July. Domestic startup businesses and IT developers can use the platform to develop smartphone applications using Watson.
