Men struggling with a midlife dip in energy and sex drive may want to think twice about taking a testosterone supplement, a new study shows.

Taking testosterone supplement raises the risk of cardiovascular diseases leading to heart attacks and strokes, according to a research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) on Nov. 6.

The new research studied 8,709 men who were assessed for the possibility of blocked arteries between 2005 and 2011.

Most of the men were in their early 60s and had a history of heart attacks, diabetes or coronary artery diseases.

Of the men, 26 percent of those who had had testosterone therapy (1,223) suffered a heart attack, stroke or died otherwise within the next three years. That compared with 20 percent of those not taking testosterone.

남성호르몬 테스토스테론을 복용하는 노년기 남성은 심장마비, 뇌졸중, 사망의 위험이 높아진다는 연구 결과가 나왔다.

6일(현지시간) 미국 의학협회저널(JAMA)에 실린 논문을 보면 노년기 남성이 정력 증진, 피로 해소, 노화 방지 등의 목적으로 테스토스테론 보충제를 복용하면 오히려 심장마비·뇌졸중·사망의 위험이 높아지는 것으로 조사됐다.

연구팀은 테스토스테론 수치가 낮은 노년기 남성 8,700명를 대상으로 2005∼2011년 사이 심장 동맥의 플라크(노인반) 축적 정도를 검사했다.

노인반이란 베타-아밀로이드라는 끈적끈적한 단백질이 뇌 신경세포 표면에 뒤엉켜 쌓인 것으로 이로 인해 신경세포는 죽게 된다.

실험에 참여한 남성들의 나이는 60대 초반으로 대부분 관상 동맥 질환, 고혈압, 당뇨병 및 다른 건강상의 문제가 있었다.

검사를 시작한지 3년이 지난 시점에서 테스토스테론 보완제를 사용해온 남성의 26%는 심장마비와 뇌졸중에 걸리거나 사망했다.

반면에 테스토스테론 보완제를 사용하지 않은 사람이 심장마비·뇌졸중·사망에 이를 위험은 20%로 상대적으로 낮았다.

특히 초기 동맥 폐색 정도를 고려하면 테스토스테론 보충제를 사용한 사람은 심장마비, 뇌졸중, 사망의 위험성이 29%나 더 높았다.

다만 기존 심장 질환이 없는 젊은 사람에게는 같은 기준을 적용하기 어렵다고 논문은 부연했다.
