POSCO International signed contracts with Hyundai Motor Group to supply an additional 3.53 million traction motor cores to the automotive group's factories in Korea and the U.S., the POSCO Group affiliate said, Thursday.
In particular, POSCO International Mexico e-Mobility will supply 1.09 million traction motor cores for the front wheels of electric vehicles (EVs) and 1.63 million rear-wheel traction motor cores to Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in the U.S. state of Georgia from 2026 to 2034.
For the carmaker's domestic production, POSCO Mobility Solution, a subsidiary of POSCO International, will supply 810,000 rear-wheel traction motor cores for EVs from 2026 to 2036.
As a result, the combined size of Hyundai Motor Group's orders for POSCO International's traction motor cores since last November reached 1.04 million units.
The components will be used in next-generational hybrid SUVs and flagship EVs.
POSCO International attributed its achievement to POSCO Mobility Solution's technologies and infrastructures, as well as POSCO's high-quality hyper non-oriented electrical steel, one of the most important materials for motor cores.
POSCO Mobility Solution is known as Korea's leading traction motor core manufacturer, while POSCO is the nation's only producer of hyper non-oriented electrical steel, which improves the energy efficiency of products incorporating its steel.
"Through collaborations with Korea's leading companies, we will continuously expand our presence in the global eco-friendly mobility market," a POSCO International official said.
POSCO International aims to annually produce 5 million traction motor cores outside of Korea by 2030, through its manufacturing facilities to be built in China, Mexico, Poland and India. The plan is intended to overcome trade barriers in the EV industry and to satisfy the demands of carmakers.
