Korean Air will present a selection of quality wines among its in-flight duty free items starting this month.
The ``SkyShop Wine Club Service'' was designed to enhance onboard service and introduce wines that are not widely known but have high quality.
To maintain the quality, passengers can purchase the five brands of wine only by making prior orders by phone (080-656-4545), through the SkyShop Web site (www.cyberskyshop.com), or by pre-order for returning flights.
They will be available at prices between $30 and $60.
The five products were selected by Bang Jin-sik, of Korean Air's catering department and also a professor at Chungkang College of Cultural Industries. He obtained a doctorate in wine studies in 2005.
The selected wines are Domaine des Senechaux/Chateauneuf-du-pape 2006, Mon Vi Colli Perugini Rosso 2005, Ca'Marcanda Promis 2006, L'ostal Cazes Minervois La Liviniere 2004, and Vino Degli Dei Amarone 2006.
Domaine des Senechaux is produced in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, France, where wines for Popes were made in the Middle Ages. It has a rich bouquet of grape and pepper. Robert Parker, a famous wine critic, rated the wine 93 out of 100.
Mon Vi Colli Perugini Rosso is made in the mountainous region in the middle of Italy by mixing Italian and French grapes. Having Italy's wilderness and France's delicacy, the wine is produced with top quality grapes from young grapevines.
Ca'Marcanta Promis was developed in Toscana by Angelo Gaja, a famous winemaker in Italy. Promis means that Gaja guarantees the quality of the wine.
L'ostal Cazes Minervois La Liviniere is made by Chateau Lynch-Bages, a Bordeaux-based winemaker, in the southern French region of Languedoc. It is a casual wine with a rich aroma.
Vino Degli Dei Amarone is made by brewing half-dried grapes in oak barrels for two years. It has a higher percentage of alcohol than average wines.
``They are not widely known here, but have good tastes and aromas. We believe they will satisfy wine lovers,'' a Korean Air official said.
For in-flight drinks, the carrier offers 36 kinds of wine from nine countries, such as France, Italy, Canada, Chile and the United States. The wines served depend on the area to which the plane is flying.
Korean Air's wine service has been recognized and has received several awards at ``Cellars in the Sky,'' a wine competition among airlines.
