POSCO International CEO Jeong Tak visited Uzbekistan on Monday to request support for the Korean port city of Busan's bid to host the 2030 Expo, the company said Wednesday.
Jeong, who is also a private bid committee member for the World Expo, met with Governor of Fergana Hayrulla Bozarov, Vice Minister of Investments and Foreign Trade Oybek Khamraev and Vice Minister of Agriculture Kakhramon Yuldashev to ask for their support.
"Since the establishment of the company's overseas branch in the capital city of Tashkent in 1992, POSCO International has achieved continuous cooperation and mutual growth with Uzbekistan for more than 30 years ― maintaining a special relationship as brothers and old friends," Jeong said during his meeting with Uzbek government officials. "Korea's hosting of the World Expo in Busan in 2030 will serve as an opportunity for Asian economies to grow together."
Uzbek government officials, including Bozarov, said, "POSCO International is the representative of most trusted company in Uzbekistan, which has long contributed to the country's economic growth and we think of POSCO as a local firm, not a foreign one. We hope Korea successfully hosts World Expo in the beautiful city of Busan, where Uzbekistan can also promote itself to the world through the global event."
Uzbekistan, along with Argentina, Vietnam and Mexico, is one of POSCO Group's major business partners in the world. Since last year, POSCO International has been carrying out various promotional activities through its local subsidiaries to raise interest in Busan's bid to host the 2030 Expo.
Last August, the company sponsored the opera, "Chunhyangjeon," in Uzbekistan marking the 30th anniversary of Korea-Uzbekistan diplomatic ties.
In October, POSCO also promoted the 2030 Busan Expo at the establishment ceremony of the Youth Education Center in Fergana, a city that is participating in the Uzbek Cotton Cluster project.
