By Baek Byung-yeul

Dyson launched its new cordless vacuum cleaner the Dyson Gen5 Detect that reduces power consumption while enhancing suction power, the company said, Wednesday.

The U.K.-based company said the Hyperdymium motor the new cleaner uses is smaller, faster and more powerful than the one in its previous cleaner the V15 Detect. It provides extra-powerful suction compared to existing high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter-supported cordless vacuum cleaners and draws up particles as small as 0.1 micrometer ― including viruses ― in the home.

The device uses a new Fluffy Optic cleaner head to make it twice as visible as the Laser Slim Fluffy cleaner head. It also a wider range with brighter light, allowing the user to more accurately check the cleaning location.

"This machine is powered by the new Gen 5 Hyperdymium motor. With the new motor design, this could be Dyson's most powerful cord-free vacuum we've ever produced. At the same time, this machine has HEPA filtration that separates 99.99 percent of dust. That means it will separate small viruses," Charlie Park, vice president of Floorcare at Dyson, said during a press conference.

He said Korea is the first country where the Dyson Gen5 Detect is being launched. "From our global dust studies, we have seen the amount of cleaning in Korea is increasing after the pandemic. Also, people put importance on cleaning in Korea higher than anywhere else in the world. So, we believe that new technology we have developed appeals to Korean consumers," he said.

The company said more people than ever are interested in maintaining their home cleaners since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Dyson's latest Global Dust Study released in February, about 95 percent of people said that the amount of housecleaning they did in 2021 was similar or increased compared to 2020 to maintain clean and healthy living spaces amid the spread of the coronavirus.

Also, around 40 percent of all respondents said they felt the need to clean when they found visible dust on the floor, up 33 percent from those surveyed in 2020.

To help users see dust clearly, Dyson unveiled its illumination technology in 2021, helping users see fine dust particles in the home by projecting light onto them.

"We will continue to concentrate on solving problems people have in their homes and innovating in those areas. To take the Gen5 as an example, we have innovated the motors in order to provide improved suction. From our global study, we recognized that, globally and in Korea, most people tend to clean when they actually see the dust, so we developed Fluffy Optic illumination technology," Park said.

The Dyson Gen5 Detect is available at the company's official website, major department stores nationwide, Hi-Mart stores and online stores that sell Dyson's products. The product is priced at 1.39 million won ($997).
