LS Electric, the power supply solutions affiliate of LS Corp., will partner with Siam Cement Group (SCG), the second-largest firm in Thailand specializing in cement-building, materials and chemicals, to fortify its microgrid business in Southeast Asia, according to the firm, Thursday.
A microgrid is a local electrical grid with defined electrical boundaries, acting as a single and controllable entity.
The LS affiliate will provide technical support to establish an energy management system (EMS) at the headquarters of the group in Bangkok, encompassing software and programming assistance for system design.
The Thailand firm will provide the equipment necessary for stable EMS operation, including solar energy facilities and an energy storage system (ESS).
The corporate identity of the Thailand entity will in the process be redefined as a green market player, distancing itself from the previous growth models that once thrived through the heavy use of fossil fuels.
Senior and top executives of the two entities signed a memorandum of understanding at SCG Group headquarters in Bangkok, Wednesday (local time).
The two agreed to seek joint opportunities to enter and expand their presence in Southeast Asia's microgrid market.
LS Electric will install an EMS at the SCG headquarters' Bangsue Complex, and apply an EMS-operated microgrid solution to other SCG factories and affiliates, following a pilot run.
Wednesday's agreement is the latest development in joint cooperation after a group of SCG officials came to visit LS Electric's Cheongju Smart Factory in North Chungcheong Province, last November, to take a tour of the high-tech facility known for its smart green manufacturing lines and factory EMS operations.
They have since advanced discussions to expedite the green energy management drive for business outcomes.
"We are glad to establish a sustainable power supply in Bangkok, in what we hope will be the first of many successes to come in the years from now," Choi said after signing the agreement.
"The partnership will advance microgrid projects across all ASEAN markets to better meet the growing energy demand."
