Electric vehicles (EVs) in Korea are expected to have their own dedicated license plates next year.
According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Thursday, it has started conducting a public preference survey over four license plate designs.
Developed by related agencies and academic institutions, including the Korea Transportation Safety Authority and Hanyang University, the four license plate drafts are light-reflected to maximize visibility at night. It also features an anti-forgery hologram with an EV mark printed on the right side.
The ministry is conducting an online survey over public preferences for the design at www.ts2020.kr and an offline survey in downtown areas, including Seoul Station, Gangnam Station and Daehangno for 11 days.
The government will issue the license plates for EVs for test operations on Jeju Island, the nation's southernmost island where EVs are sold the most in Korea, in October once the design is decided.
During the test operation period, the ministry will carry out various safety inspections, including visibility and how it influences car accident rates.
The measure is aimed at boosting the number of eco-friendly cars in a bid to cap emissions.
The government plans to have more than 200,000 EVs by 2020.
