TmaxData will supply its database management system (DBMS) software to Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors, the local database company said Wednesday.
The company signed a memorandum of understanding with the carmaker to provide its Tibero DBMS software.
Hyundai and Kia have been using the Tibero software since 2009, but they decided to expand its use because it is superior to other DBMS products in terms of performance and economic feasibility.
TmaxData said its Tibero DBMS will be applied to not only the carmakers' domestic IT infrastructure but also their global database systems in North America, China, Europe and India.
"We concluded that using Tibero, which has a certain stability in terms of performance, will bring a higher return on investment," said Suh Jung-sik, senior vice president of Hyundai Motor's ICT division.
Hyundai and Kia have been using different kinds of DBMS software from several IT companies, but Suh said the carmaker will improve the adoption rate of the Tibero software. "I cannot give a detailed figure but the Tibero has a double-digit adoption rate in Hyundai and Kia. We will improve the proportion further," he said.
TmaxData said it expects the cooperation between the two companies will create more business opportunities.
"Hyundai and Kia, together one of the global top 5 automakers, and TmaxData, which has secured numerous kinds of source technologies in the system software sector, can create more business opportunities, if the two companies keep cooperating with each other," said Lee Hee-sang, CEO of TmaxData.
Hyundai's move to go with Tibero is definitely a rare one in Korea where foreign DBMS products such as Oracle have occupied about 90 percent of the entire market.
"As Tibero is a domestic product we can provide better technical support than any other company," Lee said.
TmaxData has provided its Tibero software to some 900 companies both here and abroad. TmaxData estimates more organizations will opt for the Tibero, which is cheaper than overseas DBMS products.
"In a five-year cost calculation, companies using the Tibero can save at least 47 percent on the total cost of ownership compared to using foreign DBMS products. We expect more companies will look to use the Tibero," Lee said.
