Naturalendo Tech's patented composite, consisting of cynanchum wilfordii and various other herbal roots, has been found to relieve a symptom of osteoarthritis, a joint disease common in elderly women, the company said Thursday citing a recent study.
According to the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience & Biotechnology and the Jeonnam Institute of Natural Resources Research, the composite EstroG-100 performed as effective as Celecoxib, the top drug for alleviating osteoarthritis, in improving edema caused by inflammation.
The finding was subsequently published in this month's edition of the journal Preventive Nutrition and Food Science.
Naturalendo Tech said the recent research was aimed at verifying the mechanism of relieving postmenopausal women's joint pains.
Previous studies had shown that the combined extracts from three herbal roots ㅡ cynanchum wilfordii, phlomis umbrosa, and angelica gigas ㅡ were effective in inhibiting the symptoms of osteoarthritis.
EstroG-100, one of core patents held by Naturalendo Tech, has been made to promote health and supplement nutrition for women suffering menopausal symptoms. The company said that it consists of several herbal root extracts in scientific proportions.
In 2010, the product's effectiveness was approved by both the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a new dietary ingredient.
It also received a natural product number from Health Canada in 2011 for its effectiveness in 10 different menopausal symptoms and won a green light from the European Food Safety Authority last year.
"Special care is needed for menopausal women, because the risk of osteoarthritis increases as the level of estrogen is reduced," said Dr. Choi Chul-yung of the Jeonnam Institute of Natural Resources Research. "The herbal extracts are expected to help women suffering from those symptoms."
