Thought to have been vaporized, the Ison comet makes its way around the sun. |
Comet Ison, which was thought to have vaporized, seems to be alive and kicking.
According to NASA on Nov. 29 (KST), the comet was spotted within the sun's orbit.
Experts had thought the comet "melted and vaporized" as it began to fade dramatically from view.
However, the SOHO satellite picked up a bright light coming out the other end of the sun.
Experts believe the light can either be clouds of dust from the Ison comet or its nucleus.
Scientists had been observing the Ison comet for the past year. When the comet reached the sun's orbit, it suddenly became brighter. Experts believed the material that made up the comet heated up to boiling point because of its proximity to the sun.
The comet lit up in different segments, revealing its components to scientists. The Ison comet is believed to hold materials from 4.5 billion years ago.
