SK hynix developed the industry's fastest DRAM memory chips for mobile devices to meet users' growing demands for faster and smoother mobile experience, the memory chip maker said Wednesday.
The company said its Low Power Double Data Rate 5 Turbo (LPDDR5T) mobile DRAM operates at a data rate of 9.6 gigabits per second (Gbps), 13 percent faster than the previous generation called LPDDR5X, which was introduced in November 2022.
The company added it used the word "Turbo" in the name of the new product to emphasize the data processing speed of the DRAM. SK hynix will begin mass production of the LPDDR5T from the second half of the year.
The LPDDR is a type of DRAM that consumes less power, and is especially used in smartphones and tablet PCs. "The LPDDR5T, which operates in the ultra-low voltage range of 1.01 to 1.12V set by the JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council), is a product that not only features utmost speed but ultra-low power consumption," SK hynix said.
Given that it has not been long since the company introduced the previous generation a few months ago, the development of the new DRAM proves its technological prowess, SK hynix added.
"The company pushed the technology to new limits just two months after the LPDDR5X, the mobile DRAM with the specification of 8.5 Gbps, was introduced into the market in November 2022," SK hynix said. "We will solidify our leadership in the mobile DRAM market by providing products of various storage capacities that meet customers' needs."

The new product will be mass-produced using a 1anm process, the fourth generation of the 10-nanometer technology. The company recently provided samples of its 16-gigabyte (GB) multi-chip set, which combines multiple LPDDR5T chips into one package. The packaged product can process 77 GB of data per second, which is equivalent to transferring 15 full-HD movies in one second.
SK hynix expects the latest product could be used not only in smartphones and other smart devices but also in various applications such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies-based products as the industry forecasts more advanced memory chips will be used.
"With the development of LPDDR5T, the company has fulfilled customers' demand for ultrahigh-performance products," Ryu Sung-soo, head of DRAM Product Planning of the company, said. "We will continue to work on technology development to lead the next-generation semiconductor market and become a game changer in the IT world."
