Scared that your screen will crack if you drop your phone?
Well, the cellphone "emergency airbag" could be the answer.
In Korea, the price of fixing the screen on an iPhone X is about 400,000 won and the Galaxy S8 300,000 won.
According to reports, Philip Frenzel, an engineer at Aalen University in Germany, has invented a cellphone case that functions like an airbag. He expects to launch the device within a month with a colleague from the same university, Peter Mayer.
Frenzel acquired a patent and also received an award from the German Society of Mechatronics for his creation.
The case has active damping (AD) that deploys eight metal springs attached to "feet" on each corner when sensors detect the phone is in freefall. The feet absorb the impact, thus protecting the phone.
The legs can be pushed back into the case for the next time the phone is dropped.
The case is slim, unlike Lifeproof, whose function is similar but not as promising, making Frenzel's case an alternative to a bulky one.
