LG CNS is diversifying its business portfolio by jointly developing technologies for a private 5G service, known as e-Um in Korea, for future clients in manufacturing and logistics businesses, according to the IT arm of LG Group, Thursday.
The company said it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Kyung Hee University early this month.
"Both sides plan to expand research and development of solutions and services that can be applied to industrial sites such as manufacturing and logistics based on e-Um 5G service," LG CNS said.
The E-Um 5G private network service enables users to remotely control their machines and manufacturing equipment. The government allocates spectrum frequency for wireless communication to mobile carriers, but it also encourages non-mobile carriers to implement the e-Um service to help improve productivity and convenience in various industries.
Since the company was designated as an operator for the private 5G network service by the government in March, 2022, the company has worked on demonstrating its technologies and supplying services to private and state-run agencies.
"With this academic-industry cooperation, we will be able to improve utilization of the e-Um 5G service for industry purposes such as manufacturing and logistics and innovate customer experience," Kim Tae-hoon, head of cloud business at LG CNS, said.
