Samsung Electronics said Tuesday it will limit the maximum battery charge capacity set on all Galaxy Note 7s as a temporary safety measure.
The smartphone maker said the system update will be applied to all Note 7s through an obligatory wireless software upgrade based on over-the-air technology, it said. Once the update is in place, the handset will charge its battery no more than 2,100mAh, which is 60 percent of the 3,500mAh total capacity.
Expectations are that the update will urge those who own a Note 7 to visit a service center to replace their handsets.
Samsung Electronics said it will also cover telecom fees for those who replace their Note 7s in the Korean market to encourage them to comply with the safety measures as soon as possible. In the U.S. market, it has handed out a gift card or credit worth $25 to those who continue using a Samsung product even after handing in their Note 7 for replacement.
The company said its service centers nationwide will stay open throughout the Chuseok long weekend.
