Korean workers want to retire when they reach 60.3 years of age, on average. But seven out of 10 workers believe it impossible to work to the retirement age.
Job Korea, a job-seeking portal, said Tuesday it has come up with the desired retirement age from a survey of 1,477 workers.
Men wanted to work until 61.3 years, on average, about three years longer than women (58.4 years), and the older the worker, the later their desired retirement age. People in their 20s want to work until 59.1 years but those aged 40 or older hoped to work until 61.6 years.
By job classification, production and technical workers wanted to work longest, until they are 62.1, on average, followed by other professionals (61.1 years), service workers (60.6) and sales-administrative workers (60.3).
Given most workers in a previous opinion poll thought their actual retirement age would be 50.9 years, they want to work more than 10 years longer.
Most workers, however, think facing retirement at present workplaces is just a "dream," because 74.1 percent of respondents said: "It is impossible to work until 60 years of age without resigning from the current office."
Workers in marketing and public relations jobs, especially, were skeptical about working until the legal retirement age, with 89.7 percent uncertain about such a possibility. The skeptical replies were also high among IT workers, with 85.8 percent, followed by designers (82.5 percent) and sales-marketing workers (80.8 percent). By position, department managers were skeptical, with 80.8 percent, and by corporate types, those working at foreign companies were relatively more skeptical (77.4 percent).
Those working at public corporations and state enterprises were most optimistic about working until the legal retirement age, as 41.2 percent of them said: "I will be able to stay until 60." Among workers at private businesses, those engaging in planning jobs (40.6 percent), working at large companies (36 percent) and other professionals (33.8 percent) were relatively more optimistic of reaching the age limit, the survey said.
