The Suwon, Gyeonggi-based firm said it plans to strengthen its dominance in the area of internal memory, where it is already the top vendor, through the production of the chips. NAND flash chips are non-volatile memory chips used in mobile devices and solid-state drives (SSD).
Samsung's next generation chip comes only five months after its predecessor, a 10-nanometer chip with 64 gigabyte of memory, was launched in November last year.
The launch means the firm will maintain its diverse line-up in the area of internal memory. It already boasts high memory embedded multimedia cards and SSDs.
According to iSuppli, out of 40.5 billion NAND flash chips to be shipped this year, the 128 gigabyte chips will account for 30 percent.
"We will continue to release next-generation chips at the right moments to actively react to consumer demands," Samsung said in a statement.
