South Korean shares tumbled 4.69 percent Friday, their heaviest loss in more than a year, on concerns over Dubai's debt problems.

The won also fell sharply to 1,175.50 against the greenback, down 20.2 won from the previous close.

Banks and construction companies led falls, dealers said.

The benchmark KOSPI lost 75.02 points to 1,524.50.

Friday's fall was the largest since Nov. 6 last year when KOSPI dived 89.28 points amid the global financial crisis.

World markets have been jolted after state-run conglomerate Dubai World asked for a six-month extension to a debt repayment.

"The size of local banks and construction firms' exposure to Dubai World is small, but people are more worried about the size of European financial firms' exposure to Dubai debt," Choi Seong-lak at SK Securities told Dow Jones Newswires.

"Investors have no gut to buy stocks now due to uncertainties over how this Dubai debt crisis will develop and affect investor sentiment in the U.S. markets," he said.
Foreigners were net sellers of stocks worth 207.3 billion won ($176 million).

Builders tumbled, with Daelim slumping 7.83 percent to 80,000 won and Hyundai Engineering sinking 6.86 percent to 63,800 won.

Financial shares also fell sharply, with KB Financial Group 7.08 percent down at 56,400 won and Woori Finance Holding plunging 11.63 percent to 13,300 won. Samsung Electronics lost 4.17 percent to 712,000 won and Hyundai Motor shed 3.86 percent to 94,600 won.
