Samsung Electronics has expanded its presence in the U.S. telecommunications market by winning a second order for 5G communication equipment worth 1 trillion won ($790 million), according to company officials Wednesday.

Samsung said it was selected as a 5G communication equipment supplier for Dish Network, the fourth-largest U.S. mobile communication service provider. Samsung Electronics plans to supply a variety of communication equipment, including 5G virtualized base stations for Dish Network's nationwide network.

By being selected as a 5G communication equipment supplier for Dish, Samsung Electronics has gained the opportunity to expand its share of the US market, which is the world's largest for telecommunications equipment.

The 5G virtualization base station Samsung Electronics is supplying to Dish uses next-generation technology that supports the creation and operation of flexible and efficient communication networks by loading software on a general-purpose server to implement base station functions.

After the first successful commercialization of a virtual base station in the U.S. in December 2020, Samsung Electronics has proven its superior performance and differentiated commercial capabilities in global markets such as the UK and Japan.

Samsung Electronics' 5G virtualization base station won the CTO Choice and Best Mobile Innovation Technology Award, the grand prizes of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2022 in March.

"The 5G virtualization base station, which integrates Samsung Electronics' next-generation software technology, is leading a paradigm shift in the telecommunication market," said Jeon Kyung-hoon, head of Samsung Electronics' network business division. "We will continue to carry on the DNA of constant challenge and innovation for the infinite possibilities that the development of communication technology will bring."

Samsung Electronics is leading the global core 5G market in Korea, the United States, and Japan, and is expanding its business into new markets such as the United Kingdom, Canada, and New Zealand based on its large-scale network construction capability and next-generation mobile communication technology. The company plans to continue targeting the global 5G market by using the partnership with Dish as a stepping stone.

"Samsung Electronics' 5G virtualized base station and next-generation communication technology will play a key role in establishing Dish's 5G network. Through cooperation, we will provide better mobile communication services to our customers," Dish Network Chief Operating Officer John Swieringa said.

In December 2020, Samsung Electronics signed a network solutions deal with Verizon to supply 5G communication equipment worth 7.9 trillion won, the largest network-related deal ever made by a Korean firm.
