Korea's genome sequencing and analyzing giant EDGC has won a globally renowned industrial design award for its family tree discovery service kit.
"You Who," by the firm based on Incheon's Songdo Island, on Wednesday won the Brands and Communication category in this year's Red Dot Award.
Clients use the neat pink-cobalt blue saliva collection kit to provide a sample that the company analyzes the genome sequence of to discover which of the 23 ethnic races believed to exist they belong to.
"The You Who kit attracts those interested in discovering their family roots in a rather intimate, friendly way," EDGC, which designed the kit's packaging and client analysis report with Fillslife and B for Brand, said.
"Once you open the kit, you will rediscover yourself and all that has been connected to your DNA. The kit will welcome you to your new identity that is larger than you could have imagined."
The family tree service has been popular in the United States with some 26 million people estimated to have used it from Google's 23andMe or Blackstone's Ancestry, the industry leaders.
In March, EDGC launched You Who, the only family tree service in Korea approved by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Over 10,000 customers used it in the first three months.
