LG Energy Solution and the Research Institute of Industrial Science & Technology (RIST) will start a joint study to develop advanced technologies for smart factories, the company said, Wednesday. The two parties agreed to actively cooperate in researching various cutting-edge technologies including digital twin technology, which implements virtual representations of real-world physical objects or processes and runs simulations to predict possible problems.

In addition, LGES will first adopt smart factory-related technologies developed and owned by RIST such as 3D modeling for real facilities using Lidar. Lidar is a detection system which works on the principle of radar, but uses light from a laser.

Furthermore, LGES and the RIST will conduct joint research in the fields of remote monitoring and process technologies while exchanging personnel and utilizing each other's research facilities and equipment.

"Our cooperation with RIST will advance the manufacturing intelligence of smart factories around the world and maximize the quality and efficiency of batteries produced there," LGES Chief Product Officer Kim Myung-hwan said.

RIST President Nam Soo-hee said, "We hope to strengthen our partnership with LG Energy Solution, which makes the best-quality batteries, and Posco Chemical which produces anode and cathode materials, through our joint research with LG."
