Steel giant POSCO is promoting downsized wedding ceremonies among its employees using the company's wedding halls, to spread the culture of seeking economical but more meaningful events to celebrate marriage.
According to POSCO, 1,063 couples have tied the knot at wedding halls which the group has been operating for employees of POSCO and partner companies and their family members since October 2012, when POSCO first launched a campaign to promote small wedding. On average, 177 couples celebrate their marriage through POSCO's small wedding campaign every year.
Small wedding refers to a concept of holding cheaper and more personal wedding ceremonies by reducing the number of guests and the size of the event. It is in contrast to typical Korean weddings which invite as many guests and acquaintances as possible to a fancy banquet.
In the campaign, POSCO wedding halls have been suggesting a detailed guideline, which limits the number of guests below 200, allows up to six garlands, and places a 40,000 won per person cost cap for banquet meals.
POSCO said executives using POSCO wedding halls are obliged to follow the guideline, while promoting other employees to join the campaign. Also, it has been renovating the wedding halls regularly, as well as offering various meal options, the company said.
"I recommended a small wedding to my son and luckily all family members agreed to that," Han Ki-jeong at POSCO ICT said. "Many guests said it was nice to have a wedding hall offered at an affordable price for employees and they seemed to be more interested in small weddings."
"My wife and I wanted to hold a small but meaningful and personal wedding," said Lim Woo-sung of iRacs, a partner company of POSCO. "There seems to be not enough awareness about small weddings, and I hope these kinds of employee benefits will be offered more."
POSCO said it will continue raising public awareness of small weddings as part of its role as a corporate citizen.
Under its new chairman Choi Jeong-woo, the group has set "With POSCO" as its corporate motto and has been stressing the group's contributions to the society.
