Huneed Technologies, which specializes in manufacturing military communications equipment, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) last month to collaborate in the construction of “smart ships.”

The tech company will be in charge of research and development (R&D) of wireless transmission systems for vessels that can be used by the Navy's destroyers and in a light aircraft carrier being developed by HHI.

It will develop LiFi systems for vessels that use light to transmit data. Huneed's Li-Fi technology is expected to significantly reduce the vulnerability of communication methods on the vessels.

In addition, Huneed will develop a traceable high-capacity trunk radio system (HCTRS) to allow automatic identification of vessels and ground stations to ensure long-distance communication at a transmission speed of up to 200 Mbps.

Kim Wang-kyung, vice president of Huneed Technologies, and Park Moon-young, executive vice president at Hyundai Heavy Industries held a signing ceremony for the MOU.

“Next-generation vessels that embrace Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies need to implement a real-time communication system without blind zones to ensure the continuity and scalability of operations and to enhance the safety of crew members and the basic function of information communication,” Park said. “The collaboration with Huneed has been drawing attention in the military communication industry sector because of its LiFi technology, and this is expected to create synergy in the smart ship development being conducted by HHI.”

“It is very encouraging to team up with HHI in building a smart ship not long after we showcased our diverse LiFi solutions at the Seoul ADEX 2021 (Aerospace & Defense Exhibition) held last October. We will focus on our company-wide capabilities to implement smart ship technologies by integrating our LiFi solutions and HCTRS technologies,” said Kim.
