LG Electronics has expanded the lineup of its ultra-portable notebook brand Gram to capitalize on the local laptop market, which has been on a rise, due to increased demand for IT gadgets amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
The company said Sunday that it will release new Gram notebooks with 15.6-inch displays next month. LG, which has sold Gram laptops with 14-, 16- and 17-inch displays, decided to add the 15.6-inch one to meet various consumer needs.
"By adding a 15.6-inch product, we can establish a tight lineup covering each size of screen," the company said. LG's Gram brand is known for emphasizing portable and lightweight products.
In addition, LG offers various color choices for its LG Gram 360 laptop, which features a 360-degree hinge to convert it from a notebook to a tablet. "We added a black model for the 14-inch LG Gram 360 and a silver model to the 16-inch product," the firm said.
To boost sales, LG is also running promotions. Consumers who purchase its Gram laptops in May will be able to receive a variety of gifts, such as laptop pouches, gaming headsets and posture-correcting products.
"With the expansion of the lineup, consumers can purchase LG Gram laptops depending on their design preferences or their lifestyles," a company official said. "By offering consumers a variety of options, we will further strengthen our leading position in the laptop market, which has seen demand rise due to COVID-19."
With LG announcing the new laptops, the local market is expected to see heated competition, as its rival, Samsung Electronics, is scheduled to hold an unboxing event for its new notebooks April 28. Though Samsung hasn't revealed any details, industry analysts presume the company will present a new Galaxy Book laptop given how the invitation letter resembles an open notebook.
According to data from Yuanta Securities Korea, sales of laptops worldwide in 2020 increased by 49 percent to 220 million, year-on-year. Due to ongoing social distancing measures that are encouraging people to work and study from home, 2021's figure is forecast to be similar to that of last year.
