LG Chem has been stepping up efforts to solve environmental issues through its corporate social contribution (CSR) activities.
The company has announced its Green Connector project to tackle worsening climate change and other environmental problems.
Its vision focuses on maximizing environmental value in four main sectors ― ecology, education, energy and the economy.
As part of the overarching Green Connector project, those working on Green Ecology projects plan to expand activities to preserve biodiversity.
LG Chem aims to promote the environment to the next generation.
First, employees involved in Green Ecology activities joined hands with the Korean Federation for Environmental Movement (KFEM) to promote biodiversity among children and started to recruit college students as supporters for the initiative.
The company is in the process of recruiting 20 college supporters for the program, and will choose from among the students who applied through the KFEM homepage between Aug. 20 and Sept. 11.
Starting October, the supporters will receive assistance from experts in the field over the course of six months to develop teaching materials related to biodiversity. The university students will also hold lectures using the materials at various facilities including local youth centers.
They will also be active in social media promotions developing their own content such as card news and pictures, detailing their volunteer activities to help preserve the environment.
To relay the importance of resolving environmental issues, LG Chem will distribute the teaching materials made by its student supporters to youth centers around the nation.
Since December 2018, in cooperation with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the company established an ecosystem experience zone at an observatory on Mapo Bridge in Seoul, showcasing a diverse range of content related to the environment with an aim to raise awareness about related issues.
Another key area is Green Education providing science and environmental education for children and teens.
Currently, the company is operating the Chem Playground and Chem Camp to enhance youth education activities.
The program offers an experience zone consisting of four themes, where participants can take part in science experiments and learn the value of science in connection to the environment.
Chem Camp was established in 2005, and has invited over 7,200 students to take part in the program to date.
Starting this year, 200 middle school students have been invited to participate in the program, while a group of college student mentors will help the participants gain a better understanding of the issues through a diverse range of hands-on programs.
“Through our social contribution vision Green Connector we have been focusing on connecting various experts in the field to help enhance the environmental values in diverse sectors,” an LG Chem official said. “As a corporate citizen, the company will continue to expand social contribution activities to tackle ongoing environmental issues.”
