A kimchi-flavored seasoning powder ― developed by South Korean food startup Food Culture Lab ― won an innovation award at the famed international food expo SIAL 2019, held in India last month.

Kimchi Seasoning Mix was selected out of hundreds of new products from 175 companies in 26 countries, including the United States, Italy, India and China. This seasoning is made only with vegetable ― to be precise, the dried ingredients of kimchi. It is also free from gluten and GMOs (genetically modified organisms).

Food Culture Lab is planning to export the seasoning to India, France and other major markets in Asia and Europe.

"First of all, this (Kimchi Seasoning Mix) spices up the taste of kimchi," Food Culture Lab CEO Sun An said. "This also goes well with many other meals, side dishes and casual snacks such as French fries, fried chicken, pizza and skewered meat. This is sort of a substitute for salt and pepper."

Sun has created a name for herself by making her "tteokbokki" (a popular street food in Korea) restaurant franchise a big success in the Philippines. She works as a food developer and business consultant for corporate or individual clients interested in the food business in the Philippines and other Southeast Asian countries.

"I spent 10 years doing food business overseas," Sun said.

"This gave me a good sense of judgment of what foreigners like and don't. So I'm confident that everybody, regardless of race, religious or personal faith and health condition, will be able to enjoy the seasoning without any discomfort."
