LG Display has won an "Eye Comfort Display" certification with its automotive plastic OLED (P-OLED) displays from a German-based display testing company, the display-making arm of LG said Monday.
The company said it won the recognition from TUV Rheinland with its P-OLED displays for cars that help drivers experience greater eye comfort in any conditions such as driving in strong sunlight or at night.
It added that this is the first time in the industry for the German display inspection company to bestow the certification for an automotive display.
"This certification by TUV Rheinland means that P-OLED is internationally recognized as the most cutting-edge and optimal material for automotive displays," Shin Jung-sik, senior vice president and head of the auto business division at LG Display, said.
P-OLED uses "flexible" plastic substrates instead of glass, enabling carmakers to have more options in car design.
"LG Display's automotive P-OLED displays are the first product that we have provided our respected Eye Comfort Display certification for and we believe these displays will create a new trend in the automotive display industry," Holger Kunz, executive vice president of TUV Rheinland, said.
The company said the P-OLED displays received high scores in three categories ― light reflection ratio, blue light content and picture quality.
"LG Display's automotive P-OLED displays scored 0.22 percent in the light reflection test. This figure is far below the threshold of 1 percent. Our displays also scored 23 percent for blue light content, which is less than half of the standard of 50 percent," the company said. "Our P-OLED displays also met all testing criteria for picture quality, including color reproduction, contrast ratio and brightness."
LG Display has been pushing to improve its share in the fast-growing automotive OLED display market. The company began mass-producing automotive P-OLED displays at its plant in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province earlier this year.
According to data from IHS, automotive P-OLED display shipments are projected to reach up to 110,000 in 2020 and further grow to 4.6 million in 2026 with an annual growth rate of around 80 percent.
