LAS VEGAS ― Samsung Electronics will expand its reach into the premium home cinema market as it will launch MicroLED TVs for homes in the second half of 2020, Han Jong-hee, president of Samsung's visual display business, said Sunday (local time).

The world's No.1 TV maker held its First Look 2020 event, days ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in the U.S. city. At the event, the company unveiled its MicroLED TV, called The Wall, with different display sizes including 75, 88, 93 and 110-inch, targeting home entertainment market.

“Samsung will launch MicroLED TVs in the second half of 2020. Compared with the 2019 version, the 2020 versions will be slimmer in thickness,” Han told reporters. “At the First Look event, we displayed both QLED TV and MicroLED TV to give visitors a chance to compare them. MicroLED TVs have better brightness and color.”

The company also unveiled its latest lineup of QLED 8K TV and its versatile lifestyle TVs and new technologies such as 8K upscaling technology. The company's new QLED 8K TV uses Infinity Design technology, featuring a slim and bezel-less design with a thickness of 15 millimeters.

“Consumers use screens every day to work from home, exercise from home, and even shop from home. As our lifestyles continue to evolve, the TV screen is evolving with them to provide consumers access to their favorite content and real-time information whenever and wherever they want it,” Han said.

Samsung is especially betting big on MicroLED TVs to solidify its technological leadership in the highly competitive TV market.

Samsung first introduced its MicroLED TVs at the 2018 CES. Since then, the company has unveiled TVs that utilizes next-generation screen technology in different sizes.

MicroLED is new screen technology that can deliver better black color and higher contrast as the TV features millions of microscopic LED chips can emit core base colors such as red, green and blue lights. With this technology, MicroLED TVs have flexibility in size.

The president said he cannot reveal how many MicroLED TVs Samsung has sold so far. He added Samsung plans to launch the latest MicroLED TVs in Korea, the U.S., Europe, Australia and possibly the Middle East.
