Equinix, a U.S.-based company specializing in internet connection and data centers, opened a data center in Seoul to meet growing demand from local enterprises for high-performance interconnection systems, the company said Friday.
Chris Jang, country manager of Equinix Korea, said during a media conference that the company has established more than 200 data centers in 53 cities of 25 countries.
"The new data center in Seoul, dubbed SL1, will offer comprehensive interconnection systems, supporting digital transformation of local companies, and hybrid and multi-cloud migration," he said.
SL1 is located in Digital Media City in western Seoul which is connected with business districts in central Seoul and Gangnam-gu as well as the Yeouido financial district.
The interconnection systems to be offered at SL1 include Cross Connect, Equinix Connect and Equinix Internet Exchange, which enable companies based in Korea to be connected with their customers, partners and service providers around the world without delay.
The firm's software-defined interconnection service, Equinix Cloud Exchange Fabric, will be offered within the first quarter of next year, Jang said, noting that this will enable local companies to be connected with global cloud service providers such as Google, IBM, Microsoft and Oracle.
Equinix, headquartered in California, established its Korean unit in January to expand its presence in the domestic market.
Then the company joined hands with Naver Business Platform (NBP), a cloud subsidiary of the nation's largest portal operator, supporting the latter's global expansion through the former's eight data centers around the globe.
"Our services help companies reduce time required for making inroads into new cloud service markets," Jang said.
Anthony Ho, regional product management director at Equinix Asia-Pacific said Equinix services help customers "reach everywhere, interconnect everyone and integrate everything."
He added, "We are happy to launch the Seoul center and connect Korea to the global ecosystem."
