Auto parts maker Hyundai Mobis' social campaign promoting transparent umbrellas is found to be effective in traffic safety for children, the company said Wednesday, citing a study published in the state-run traffic authority's journal.

According to the study, the number of pedestrian traffic accidents involving preschool-aged children who joined the company's campaign over the past two years declined four times faster than that of the national average.

Among 64,000 preschool-aged children at 104 kindergartens and daycare centers who participated in the company's campaign, the number of children in traffic accidents declined by 27 percent to 27 from 37 in the past two years.

During the same period, the number of accidents affecting children of the same age across the country declined by 7 percent to 1,440 from 1,550.

Hyundai Mobis has been distributing transparent umbrellas to elementary schools and kindergartens since 2010, as well as providing safety education there. So far 900,000 children have participated in the program.

“The number of transparent umbrellas we provided will surpass 1 million this year,” a Hyundai Mobis official said. “As we have confirmed the importance of the traffic safety campaign, we will continue developing educational content and promoting social awareness of children's traffic safety.”
