Korea's parochialism on FM nominee's daughter
The United States doesn’t have it. Nor does Korea. Still, Cheong Wa Dae has insisted that Kang Kyung-hwa, now the first female foreign minister nominee, should have her adult daughter give up her American citizenship and switch to Korean. An inquiry to the U.S. Embassy in Seoul came up with nothing of such restrictions.

Are misgivings about China misplaced?
China fears environmental contamination and earthquakes that may be triggered by North Korea’s underground nuclear tests, possibly bringing Beijing to the breaking point of its patience with its blood-sealed but increasingly defiant ally, a China’s Korea expert said during an interview Friday. “Chinese people in the northeast region that borders North Korea are fearful that t...

Moon, Trump doing 'Gangnam Style' together
How best can President Moon Jae-in prepare for the late June summit with U.S. President Donald Trump? What about bringing a boy band or girl group along to mellow Trump’s crass heart of gold, or inviting a bevy of Korean golfers to play him in his game of passion? The summit is expected to generate a lot of sparks, if not fireworks for two reasons.

Mr. President, break Xi-Trump conspiracy
President Moon Jae-in should check out on one thing, if he doesn’t want to get sidetracked by big powers in determining the future of policy on North Korea. Definitely, there are something fishy about how the United States, the supposed key ally of South Korea, and China, the new superpower.

Let's pay Trump off
Let’s calm ourselves down. It’s exasperating to hear Trump demand South Korea pay $1 billion for a missile interceptor owned and operated by the U.S. After all, the two allies cut a deal by which Korea provided land for a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery, while the U.S. paid for the rest - hardware and maintenance. It’s tempting to shout back at Trump and t...

China wants more than Korea
First, some sleuth work is in order. U.S. President Donald Trump revealed he had a history lesson from Chinese leader Xi Jinping in which the latter falsely claimed Korea used to be a part of China. This misguided claim was left unnoticed in the Wall Street Journal’s interview article with Trump at first but was discovered later when the transcript was made available. There a...

Korea owes it to Mr. Trump
Over his handling of North Korea so far, Korea has three reasons to thank U.S. President Donald Trump. First, despite some snafu, Trump’s show of force - the most dramatic being the redirection of the USS Carl Vinson to the Korean Peninsula - has obviously forced North Korea to rethink its strategy of pressing ahead with its nuclear and intercontinental ballistic missile (ICB...
