History repeats itself
A news item out of Seoul became an interesting topic in a foreign media outlet. The Economist based in London introduced Jeju as “an island off South Korea's southern coast, known for its hiking trails, temperate climate and the tough old women who dive off its cliffs for abalone, a delicacy popular with the glitterati in Seoul, the faraway capital.”

Will name change work?
Since the election of President Moon Jae-in in May 2017, the losers, namely conservatives classified as rightists against Moon's so-called progressive leftists, have been in pieces and increasingly losing the confidence of the people, particularly those in their 20s and 30s.

Two-headed bird
The turbulent year of 2019 is drawing to a close amid ever-deepening ideological confrontation between the left and the right and the worsening economic situation.

Female conductor from Seoul
Still making headlines in the final stage of the turbulent year of 2019 is bad news about increasing concerns over national security, stubborn economic debacles, intensifying left-right confrontation, choking fine dust blowing from China and the unilateral passage of next year's budget bill, to name a few.

Suicide is sin
South Korea has earned a dishonorable title as a country with the highest suicide rate among the 34 OECD members. Furthermore, it is ranked fourth in the world (26.9 suicides per 100,000) following Lithuania (31.9), Russia (31), and the South American country Guyana (29.2), according to the World Health Organization report.

Payola and fair competition
Entering the second half of his five-year term, President Moon Jae-in has vowed anew to mobilize every possible measure to enhance the level of fairness in all sectors of Korean society. Then, what does fairness exactly mean? All the dictionaries define it in terms of justice: impartial and just treatment or behavior without favoritism or discrimination toward one side or another.

How to fight obesity
Just two months are left until the turbulent year of 2019 disappears into history. Around this time of every year, many of us look back on what we have done over the past days of the year. What comes to mind first are our “ambitious” New Year resolutions we made 10 months ago about our health problems.

North Korea's own goal
There were no spectators, no live TV coverage, no reporters, no grass pitch and no goals for a bizarre South and North Korean football match to qualify for the 2022 Qatar World Cup in the entirely empty Kim Il-sung Stadium in Pyongyang, Tuesday.

Society sans respected elders
When Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan, the nation's first Roman Catholic cardinal, who was a signature guiding star of South Koreans in their crusade for democracy for three decades, passed away 10 years ago in 2009 at the age of 86, many people lamented that they had lost their final “respected elder.”

Hypocritical behavior
We Koreans often use “nae-ro nam-bul,” an expression certain to make non-Korean speakers tilt their heads and question: “What does this mean?” It is a coined Korean term (with an English word inserted), a four-syllable abbreviation from “naega hamyeon, 'romance'; nami hamyeon, bullyun.” In short, it means: “If I love someone, it is a romance; but if others do, it is an affair.”
