No peaceful days of summer
Positive news makes people happy, while negative news make people angry and scares them.

Pak Se-ri did it her way
It was 18 years ago back in July 1998 when we, the Korean people, were desperate to overcome the 1997 foreign currency crisis that almost forced the nation to moratorium. When the abbreviation of the International Monetary Fund, IMF, jolted the nation, we spelled it out in self-scorn: "I'm F or IMFool." And it changed not before long to "IMF (ighting) or IMF (ine), showing our efforts and determination to pay back the IMF bailout loan. We could come out of the then dark tunnel as we did what we had to do in total unity in such a way to launch a voluntary pan-national campaign to collect gold...

Dear lawmakers, change, please!
In daily life, we face many “necessary evils” and various administrative restrictions. A year ago in this column, I used this term for the National Assembly, asking, “Do we need this kind of parliament?”

Life expectancy of Korean women
It has long been proven that, for the most part, women outlive men. Scientists have a number of biological theories and reasons behind why this is so. Traditionally, the difference in life expectancies between genders has been blamed on the greater risks men take in terms of accidents and illness linked to lifestyle such as heart disease and cancer.

Still technically at war
Tomorrow is the 66th anniversary of the outbreak of the 1950-53 Korean War, but dubbed "June 25 War" by South Koreans. The fratricidal conflict, however, is not over unfortunately.

To tell the truth, such a fraternity does not exist actually. The term is jokingly on the lips of senior citizens whose main topic is "how to live the rest of our life."

I don't like to cough
Last week I traveled to the Taihang Mountains, a Chinese mountain range running through Shanxi, Henan and Hebei provinces, with my old high school classmates for five days.

The shorter, the better?
A comparatively early summer has started with weathermen predicting unusual heat this year due to climate change following global warming. Scorchers naturally force people, particularly, women, to wear “bolder” clothing. Hot pants and miniskirts are already getting shorter.

Driving for revenge
The recent talk of the town is road rage meaning an automobile driver's aggressive or angry behavior that could lead to altercations, assaults and collisions that result in injuries and even death. In Korean terms, we call it "driving for revenge." What angers drivers on roads and causes their "illegal'' retaliatory driving?

Major League 'Ho Trio'
Korean baseball fans are happy these days, especially during the busy morning hours when they are preparing to go to work or to school thanks to Major League Baseball players from their country. As a famous girl group member asked “jokingly” or “ignorantly” some years ago why they were playing soccer so early in the morning always (in Europe) and so she could not go to bed. Many Koreans may want MLB games to be held in the morning there in the United States. Baseball is everyday life along with American football in the United States, boasting of more than a 100 years tradition and history.
