Queer fear
I met a friend recently who expressed his admiration for President Moon Jae-in. Surely, he's more qualified to speak on the matter than I am. A Korean native, and Ivy League educated, he's also well-traveled and well versed in American and Korean political affairs. He has a deeper understanding than I do on the intricacies of Korean society.

The American Empire
The recent passing of George H.W. Bush allowed for the usual accolades bestowed upon other late, American presidents and high-ranking elected officials. Even CNN's Jake Tapper, not known for hyperbole, gave effusive praise of Bush senior as an elder statesmen and kind patriarch.

Bad bedfellows
The more powerful a country, the more complicated (and problematic) its foreign policy usually is. My native country of the United States of America has a lot of explaining to do in this regard.

Men still suck (2)
From the most recent data, Korea ranks highest in wage disparities between men and women of all member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Korea's the worst at tackling wage parity between the sexes.

Does democracy still work?
“One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors … The price good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men,” said Plato.

Your kind aren't welcomed here
Have we forgotten the 20th century, with its Stalin, Lenin, Hitler, Mussolini, Polpot and Mao Zedong: its pogroms and purges; its Holocaust and World Wars; its conflagration of miseries and atomic afterglows? The cicatrix of Poland and the cicatrix of Cambodia and Laos, the burned-out remains of Hue, the palls from these were thick with the stench of death; we, some of us at least, do not remember.

How Trump was elected
The recent summit between a real dictator, Kim Jong-un, and a wannabe neo-fascist, Donald J. Trump, may be much ado about nothing. Seeing the two corpulent men on the world stage, North Korean and American flags presented side-by-side, was surreal. The international community was fascinated with this spectacle. Me? Not so much.

Facebook isn't free
There's a price to pay for everything, even the internet. In the 90s, the global community decided the internet should be ostensibly free. Think of it: the visibility of a YouTube, the algorithms, security, and data storage of a Facebook or Gmail, the utility of a Google _ all of these and more were supposed to be offered to the masses free of charge.

Pretty boys
Men are lucky. Or rather, we have made it so: Employment opportunities, wages, promotions, basic safety, and the inequitable division of household, emotional, and family labor, are examples. So it is, or rather was, with beauty.

Korea's reunification: pipe dream
The Olympics are over. And as per usual, Trump's chaotic administration caused a bit of controversy. Yet, honestly, I understood the reasoning behind the said administration's behavior.
